10 Signs Your Website Needs a Redesign (and a 5-Minute Test)
10 Signs Your Website Needs a Redesign (and a 5-Minute Test)

Introduction

Not sure if your website needs a redesign? If it is slow, awkward on a phone, or quietly failing to bring in inquiries, it is costing you customers you never see. Here are ten signs it is time to act, how to tell a redesign from a simple refresh, and a five-minute self-test you can run today.

1. Your website looks outdated

Visitors judge a business in seconds, and a dated layout, mismatched fonts, low-quality photos or walls of text tell them the business may be just as neglected. Clean and simple beats trendy: you do not need animations, you need clear hierarchy, readable type and current information.

A quick test: if your site still describes services you stopped offering, or your branding no longer matches your Facebook page, invoices or signage, the design is working against you. Our web development services start with your current goals, not a template.

2. It does not work well on mobile

Most visitors arrive on a phone, and many businesses in the Philippines get the bulk of their traffic from mobile and from links shared on Facebook and Messenger. If people have to pinch to zoom, scroll sideways or tap tiny buttons, they leave.

Open your homepage, your top service page and your contact form on your own phone. Check that text is readable without zooming, buttons are easy to tap, and the form can be completed in under a minute. Google’s guidance on mobile-friendly sites explains what a good mobile setup looks like.

3. It loads slowly

Slow pages lose visitors before they see your offer. Use PageSpeed Insights on your homepage and look at Core Web Vitals, where “good” means:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): 2.5 seconds or less
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): 200 milliseconds or less
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): 0.1 or less

Common causes are oversized images, too many plugins, heavy page-builder code and cheap hosting. Many of these can be fixed without a full rebuild, which is why measuring comes first.

4. Visitors cannot tell what you do

Show your homepage to someone who has never heard of you for five seconds, then ask what you sell and who it is for. If they cannot answer, the page is doing too little.

A strong homepage opens with one clear headline (what you offer and for whom), one supporting sentence, a short list of services and a single obvious next step. Redesigning is often as much about rewriting and restructuring content as it is about visuals.

5. It is not generating leads

Traffic without inquiries usually means the path from “interested” to “contacted” is broken. Look at your site as a first-time customer would:

  • Is your phone number, email or contact form visible without scrolling or searching?
  • Does each service page say what happens next?
  • Is there one clear call to action per page, not five competing ones?
  • Does the contact form ask only for what you need?

If you are unsure where visitors drop off, a free website assessment will show you which pages and steps are costing you inquiries.

6. Navigation is confusing

If visitors need more than two clicks to find a service or your contact details, the structure needs work. Too many menu items, duplicate pages and vague labels like “Solutions” are the usual culprits. For a service business, a simple structure is enough: Home, Services (with a page per service), About, Blog, Contact.

7. Updating the site is a chore

Changing a phone number, adding a service or publishing an article should take minutes, not a developer’s afternoon. If every edit breaks the layout or needs technical help, the site’s templates and editing setup are holding you back. This matters most if you plan to publish content regularly, such as the pricing and cost guides customers search for.

A good-looking site can still be invisible. Typical causes:

  • Generic or duplicate page titles and descriptions
  • Thin service pages with a few lines of text
  • Weak internal linking and unclear site structure
  • Slow pages and poor mobile usability
  • Missing image descriptions (alt text)
  • Outdated or duplicate content

Plan SEO before the redesign starts, not after. Page structure, URLs and content decide how search engines read your site, and changing them later is costly. Keep existing URLs wherever you can, and redirect any that change. Google’s SEO Starter Guide is a solid reference.

9. It no longer reflects your business

Maybe you started with three services and now offer ten, moved into a new market, or rebranded. If your site still tells the old story, new customers get the wrong impression and existing ones lose confidence. Check that your services, photos, messaging, contact details and calls to action match where the company is today. If you also rely on a Facebook page, see why you need both a website and a Facebook page.

10. It has technical or security problems

Outdated themes and plugins, repeated errors, unexplained redirects or suspicious activity are warning signs. A redesign can clean up the technical foundation, but it is not a substitute for a security review, because a new design on a compromised site is still a compromised site. Start with our WordPress security checklist, and consider a professional assessment through our cybersecurity services if you see signs of a breach.

Refresh, redesign or rebuild?

Not every outdated site needs to be thrown away. Match the fix to the problem:

OptionBest whenWhat changesTypical risk
RefreshThe foundation is sound but the look, photos or copy are staleVisual design, images, text, brandingLow
RedesignStructure, user journey or messaging is the problemLayout, navigation, content, conversion pathsMedium: protect SEO with redirects
RebuildThe platform is slow, insecure or impossible to maintainCode, hosting, templates, often everythingHigher: plan migration and testing

An assessment before you commit usually saves money, because many sites need a targeted fix, not a rebuild.

  • I can change text and publish a post without help
  • My key pages appear in Google when I search my business name and main service

Frequently asked questions

How often should a business website be redesigned?

There is no fixed number of years. Redesign when performance, usability or messaging stops supporting your goals, and refresh content and visuals in between.

Will a redesign hurt my Google rankings?

It can if URLs, titles and content change without a plan. Keep URLs where possible, set 301 redirects for any that move, and carry over well-performing content.

How long does a redesign take?

It depends on size and content readiness. Small business sites often take a few weeks, while larger or custom builds take longer, and late content is the most common delay.

Can I just fix speed and mobile problems instead?

Often yes. If the structure and messaging are sound, targeted performance and responsive fixes cost far less than a rebuild.

How much does a new business website cost?

It varies widely with scope. See our business website cost guide for 2026 for a breakdown.
